The day in Cozumel doesn’t end when the sun sets. What better way to begin your evening than with a traditional Mexican meal, followed by a refreshing Margarita on an open-air patio as you watch the moonlight dancing on the ocean.

With a myriad of different palate-pleasing restaurants and cafés to choose from, visitors to Cozumel are sure to find something to their liking. You can sample authentic Mayan and Mexican dishes or choose from a number of restaurants serving international fare.

If you’ve only had Mexican food in the U.S., you’re in for a surprise. Authentic Mexican cuisine is quite different from the usual fare that is served in most restaurants in the States. You’ll be astounded by the diversity of the menus. Also keep in mind that some of the foods you may be familiar with will not be prepared exactly the same way here.
There’s also an abundance of fresh fish and shellfish in this region. Lobster, shrimp and grouper are especially popular, and you will find them cooked with mexican spices or simply grilled to retain that fresh-from-the-sea flavor. For a refreshing seafood dish, you should try ceviche, a dish comprised of fish or conch marinated with lemon, vinegar, onions, tomatoes and cilantro.

You’ll want to sample the more familiar dishes like tacos, a combination of meat rolled in a tortilla and fried. Tamales are made with corn flour dough stuffed with meat or chicken and sauce, steamed in banana leaves or corn leaves.

Whatever your choice of main dishes, you’ll probably be served guacamole. This favorite Mexican paste is made of avocado, onion, tomato, chile and salt and is a pleasing accompaniment to any meal. And for the morning meal, a traditional Mexican breakfast is not to be missed. An order of huevos rancheros. Fried eggs served on a tortilla with tomato sauce and fried beans on the side. It could be accompanied by an order of fresh fruit. It will definitely set you up for the day.

Cozumel has an increasing number of restaurants offering other cuisines. You can satisfy your craving for Italian, Chinese or Continental food, as well as traditional American favorites.

Freedom in Paradise

Freedom in Paradise is as much a state of mind as it is a place. Situated on the southern corner of Cozumel, it’s a favorite of the locals who flock there on their days off to escape for a few hours. The stunning and romantic open ocean vista makes Freedom the perfect place to walk on the beach, watch the sun dance on the waves or just unwind after a hectic day chasing deals downtown. Just drop into a hammock, breathe out and feel the stress evaporate as you check out the menu while sipping a fruity tropical drink or a cold beer. For the ultimate in relaxation, wander off to the second floor where massages are offered to the accompaniment of reggae music and the soothing roar of the surf as it crashes on the shore.
Hang out with the staff, cuddle with your significant other in a hammock or make new friends. Don’t be surprised if one of the owners, Sylvia or William Sr. comes around to say hello. Either way, do not miss the opportunity to sample the simple gastronomic delights of the Caribbean’s best ceviche, fried fish and shrimp quesadillas. Before you leave, take a few moments to check their sibling eatery, Rasta’s, where they offer all kinds of souvenirs such as t-shirts, jewelry, ceramics and souvenir Rasta Dolls. Once there, meet the island’s largest (and happiest) free-roaming pigs, Harley and Porky.
Freedom in Paradise and Rasta’s: Two great spots in one place where you can set your mind and body free.
