Cozumel's Parks & Museums

The Island's Parks and Museums

This is why you came to Cozumel… for the breathtaking transparent waters, diverse wildlife, aquatic adventures and Mayan history. Our parks give you the very best experience, and that's why these are the "MUST SEE" places while on the island.

Cozumel is Mexico's best-known island with the greatest recognition worldwide for its natural beauty. In Mexico, the sun's first rays shine on Cozumel before anywhere else on the country and its inhabitants are heirs of the great Mayan culture and jealous guardians of their traditions.

It is known as the "Island of the Swallows". The name comes from the Mayan words "cuzam" which means swallow, and "humil" that means "land of", forming the word "Cuzamil". As the first Catholic mass in Mexico was celebrated right here 500 years ago, this relevant event is part of the fascinating history of Cozumel which also features Mayan archaeological sites such as the "San Gervasio" vestiges.

Cozumel is internationally recognized as a scuba diving paradise due to its location on the largest barrier reef in the American continent. Its transparent blue water will give you the experience of being inside a marine wonderland.

Nature lovers and enthusiasts are pleased by the richness of our natural environment and its great variety of options. The island has protected natural areas with many different ecosystems such as beaches and sand dunes, marshes and mangroves, reefs, canopy jungles, savannas and lagoons. In Cozumel it's easy to experience nature and all it has to offer, just visit "Chankanaab Natural Park" and the ecological reserve "Punta Sur Park".

The Caribbean charm of Cozumel seduces visitors to fall in love with the island. An ideal place for the entire family as well as those seeking diversity and something different. Dreamlike landscapes that allow total relaxation in its beautiful beaches as well as fun adventures with lots of activities but above all, being in direct contact with the wonderful marine world.

You Name It! Culture, traditions, history, beaches, exuberant vegetation, exotic flora and fauna, recreational activities and more can be found inside the parks of Cozumel through Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, Chankanaab Natural Park, the San Gervasio archaeological site, and the Island Museum.

Chankanaab Natural Park

Iconic natural beauty of Cozumel and home of the lagoon from which it receives its name. The lagoon is the only one of its kind in the world due to its particular system of diverse coral species.

Cozumel Island Museum

The guardian of Cozumel's secrets is waiting to share them with you. Learn about the island's history, ecological richness and the interesting Maya whom once ruled here. Explore the museum's four halls, each with its unique theme. You can also enjoy temporary exhibits dedicated to local, national and international art.

Discover Mexico Park

Experience all of Mexico's rich history, culture, art and traditions at Discover Mexico Park, the Mexican Caribbean's only theme park that showcases Mexico's diversity and many marvels all in one place. The tours offer excitement and fun for all ages.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

The ecological park Punta Sur is a nationally protected reserve, among the largest of the island. The spectacular Celarain lighthouse can be explored all the way to the top and miles of beaches can be enjoyed.

San Gerasio

The most important archaeological site in Cozumel. It was a Mayan sacred center and a strategic place for commerce and political development of the area. Considered as the sanctuary of the deity of the moon, fertility and medicine, the Goddess Ixchel.
